Draft Profile: Bio
Nasir Peoples from Archbishop Wood High School was rated a 3-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 3-star grade by 247 Sports. Following high school, Peoples opted to join Virginia Tech.In 2018 as a freshman Peoples saw action in just 2 games and played a total of 14 snaps at linebacker for the Hokies. He recorded only one tackle, no assists, while adding one stop. In coverage Peoples notched up no pass breakups, no interceptions, and QB rating when targetted of 108.3.
As a sophomore in 2021 he played in 13 games and logged 817 snaps for the Hokies. He made decent 69 tackles, 25 assists, and had 20 stops. In coverage he totaled one pass breakup, one interception, and an unimpressive QB rating when targetted of 122.2.
In 2022 as a junior Peoples played in 11 games and contributed on 578 snaps. He chalked up 47 tackles, 13 assists, and added 23 stops. In the secondary Peoples forced one pass breakup, no interceptions, and gave up QB rating when targetted of 85.6.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Likely has the length and physical ability to fit in a press scheme but ideal fit as a zone defender because of his recognition skills and an above-average burst to close on the ball.
- Is an explosive mover with quickness and speed. He’s at his best attacking downhill, shooting gaps in run support, and disrupting the backfield.
- Can track the ball downfield and gets his head around when playing in a trail position, and Peoples shows excellent ball skills when breaking on a route. He’s a plus tackler in run support as well.
- Has the good, low backpedal and closing speed to be effective in off coverage. He’s excellent against the run, willing to get physical and fight off blocks on the perimeter, and a sure, wrap-up tackler who plays with a linebacker’s mentality.
- Explodes out of his backpedal and has the hands and coordination to force interceptions.
- Good hustle player who puts himself in the action when he's not directly involved. Knows how to use his height and vertical leap.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Susceptible to double moves, though that could be coached out of him. But the problem is that Peoples doesn’t track the ball downfield, and he seems to lack the ball skills to break up plays.
- Tends to play conservatively and give too much cushion when playing off.
- Willing but not threatening tackler. Doesn't have the quick-twitch reaction when he gears down to rebuild to top speed. More instinctive than explosive.
