Mr Irrelevant -The Last Pick of the NFL Draft Every Year Since 2015
Are you a die-hard football fan that loves to peak at the NFL draft each year? If so, then you’re probably familiar with Mr. Irrelevant - the last pick in the entire draft. Everyone knows that being ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ isn't exactly a title of honor, but it is still an important and interesting part of every NFL draft.
Every year, the NFL Draft brings with it a lot of excitement and anticipation. Teams from around the league vying for the chance to select new players who will help them reach their goals. But, who is selected last? Who gets stuck with that dreaded final draft pick?
Online bookmaker Bodog was offering Super Bowl prop bets online for the recent Super Bowl LVII between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. It considered Patrick Mahomes the favorite for the MVP award during The Big Game, and he duly delivered. But the former Texas Tech University hasn’t been the only standout quarterback this season.
Another man who has stood out is San Francisco 49ers rookie Brock Purdy. The 23-year-old was selected as Mr. Irrelevant in 2022 and began the season as the third-choice QB at Levi’s Stadium. However, following injuries to both Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance, Purdy was thrust into the limelight… and boy did he deliver.
Purdy was the star of the 49ers' offense and he led his team all the way to the NFC Conference Championship game. Unfortunately, he too suffered an injury in that game and his side went on to lose to the Eagles, but not before he had announced himself to the world.
In honor of Purdy’s memorable rookie season as Mr. Irrelevant, we have decided to take a trip down memory lane ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft. Here is the final draft pick of every NFL Draft since 2015.
2016 Final Pick – Maurice “Mo” Alexander
The St. Louis Rams selected Mo Alexander in the fourth round with the 110th overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft. During his college career at Utah State, he was named an All-Mountain West Honorable Mention twice and also set a school record with three blocked kicks in one game.
After being drafted by the Rams, Alexander only played two seasons in St. Louis before bouncing around from team to team over the next couple of years. He eventually retired during training camp for the 2019 season due to a recurring groin injury that had been plaguing him since 2017.
2017 Final Pick – Chad Kelly
The Denver Broncos made Chad Kelly their selection in Round 7, giving him the tag of Mr. Irrelevant. Kelly had previously starred at Clemson where he was a first-team All-ACC selection and an honorable mention All-American before transferring to Ole Miss after suffering an injury while playing for Clemson in 2014.
After being drafted by Denver, Kelly played six games as a backup quarterback during his rookie season before suffering an injury that ultimately ended his career as an NFL player.
2018 Final Pick – Trey Quinn
In 2018, Washington chose Trey Quinn with their Mr. Irrelevant pick. During his college days at SMU, Quinn broke several single-season receiving records including receptions (114) and yards (1,236). As a rookie for Washington, he appeared in 11 games primarily as a slot receiver but suffered an ankle injury that caused him to miss most of his second season before bouncing around the Jacksonville Jaguars, Las Vegas Raiders, and Denver Broncos.
2019 Final Pick – Caleb Wilson
The Arizona Cardinals took tight end Caleb Wilson out of UCLA with the final pick of the 2019 draft. In Los Angeles in 2017, Wilson racked up over 200 receiving yards in one game against Texas A&M, a game in which UCLA overturned a 34-point deficit to win 45-44.
Wilson has bounced around a number of franchises, namely Washington, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Denver Broncos, however, has primarily found himself in the practice squads. As of the culmination of the 2022 season, he is currently a free agent.
2020 Final Pick – Tae Crowder
The New York Giants chose linebacker Tae Crowder out of Georgia late on day three of the 2020 draft process with their final selection—the 255th overall pick—in 2020’s draft class. In the two years prior to being drafted, Crowder racked up 48 tackles and was one of the 12 finalists for the Butkus Award.
It took him six weeks to be activated by the Giants, but he was finally activated in week six of his rookie campaign. He recovered a fumble in the narrow 20-19 victory over Washington and even managed to sack legendary Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. He has since moved on to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
2021 Final Pick – Grant Stuard
The Tempa Bay Buccaneers made linebacker Grant Stuard Mr. Irrelevant in 2021. They selected the 230-pounder as the final selection in that year’s draft after an impressive spell at the University of Houston.
Unfortunately for Struard he couldn’t break into the Buccs’ starting lineup and has since moved on to the Indianapolis Colts. Throughout his short NFL career, he has thus far made 26 tackles and forced one fumble.
