Draft Profile: Bio
Akheem Mesidor from Clearwater Academy High School was rated a 4-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 3-star grade by 247 Sports. After high school, Mesidor joined West Virginia after being heavily recruited.In 2020 as a freshman Mesidor saw action in 10 games and played a total of 243 snaps for the Mountaineers. He recorded 18 tackles, 6 assists, while adding 16 stops. As a pass rusher, he added 13 total pressures, which included 7 QB hurries, one QB hit, and 5 sacks on the season.
As a sophomore for the Mountaineers in 2021 Mesidor played in 13 games and took part in 608 snaps for the Mountaineers. He recorded 27 tackles, 9 assists, while adding 23 stops. As a pass rusher, he chalked up 33 total pressures, and 24 QB hurries, 4 QB hits, and 5 sacks during the year.
After season's end Mesidor transferred to Miami (FL) where as a junior for the Hurricanes in 2022 Mesidor played in 11 games and played 396 snaps for the Hurricanes. He recorded 23 tackles, 7 assists while making 26 stops. As a pass rusher, he produced 28 total pressures, which included 16 QB hurries, 4 QB hits, and an excellent 8 sacks on the year.
In 2023 as a senior Mesidor logged playing time in just 2 games and logged a total of 45 snaps for the Hurricanes. He also added just 3 tackles, one assist, and 4 stops.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Plays with leverage at the point of attack whether inside or outside. Keeps eyes in the backfield when inside; moves linemen to either side with strong hands.
- His spin move is already NFL-caliber, and Mesidor displays a very good motor.
- Mesidor has an excellent feel for working off blockers and knowing how and when to counter as the play goes on.
- Challenges inside with quickness and strong hands. Run-and-chase defender who can leave a mark.
- Mesidor has violent hands and consistently breaks away and disengages from blockers. He’s instinctive, reading, reacting and locating the ball quickly, and finishing plays as an authoritative, wrap-up tackler.
- Flashes an explosive burst and can surprise better overall athletes with his ability to get upfield. Has a closing burst when given a free lane. Has the frame to consider moving inside
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Misses tackles, even when Mesidor gets his hands on the ballcarrier. Needs to improve hand placement and technique.
- Not overly flexible or loose. Limited, predictable pass-rush arsenal. Struggles to locate the ball at times and needs to do a better job with his read-and-react skills.
- Mesidor isn’t a true edge burner and might be better off kicking inside on passing downs.
