The Cowboys ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided.
They are betting Allen proves the room right and everyone else wrong. That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 29th pick they get a building block for the line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Zach Frazier at the 56th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A real head-scratcher, Braelon Allen in Round 3, Pick 24 is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Isaac Guerendo in pick No. 133 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A tidy bit of business in slot 160, where Tommy Eichenberg graded well above the range. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Josh Newton in pick 164 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A slide stopped in the Round 5 slot, with Cornelius Johnson worth more than the price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Somehow Kalen King was still sitting there in No. 216, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jaylan Ford at slot 233 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Garret Greenfield at the 244th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jowon Briggs at the Round 7 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
