The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Cowboys watched Jahdae Barron slide 158 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The Alec Pierce deal gives the class an established piece to lean on. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 14 they get an every-down engine for the run game at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, Walter Nolen in slot 44, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Wyatt Milum in No. 76 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Tre Harris at the Round 3 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Somehow Dylan Sampson was still sitting there in pick 110, and they pounced on premier running back value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jack Bech at pick No. 113 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A cornerback of that caliber at the 150th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board fumbled Jahdae Barron all the way to the 170th pick, and they scooped it up. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Steal is underselling it; Jaxson Dart at the Round 5 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They barely believed it either: Jihaad Campbell still on the board at No. 174. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Demetrius Knight Jr. in slot 190 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Dylan Fairchild at the 211th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Savion Williams in pick 249 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
