Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Chargers were there to profit. Isaiah Williams, the No. 185 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 223rd pick.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. If Gargiulo pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th pick they get a No. 1 receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Kingsley Suamataia at slot 69 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Cam Hart slid further than he should have, and Round 4, Pick 6 is lovely value for the cornerback. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Nice patience on Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, who had no business lasting to pick 139. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Cody Schrader at the Round 5 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached a country mile for Nick Gargiulo at the 183rd overall pick, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Isaiah Williams in pick No. 223, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Tyrice Knight in No. 239 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A minor itch, scratched.
They paid up for Khalid Duke at No. 256 when waiting would have done the job. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
