Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Chargers came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close.
That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. They are betting Booker proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 17 they get a building block for the line. A clean fit for the roster.
Good price on Brian Thomas Jr. in No. 37, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the 69th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
No edge and no loss on Dominick Puni in the 105th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
They paid a round early for Austin Booker in the Round 5 slot, more than the board wanted. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A slide stopped in pick 142, with Cole Bishop worth more than the price. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Curtis Jacobs in slot 183. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They paid sticker price for Marcus Harris in pick No. 226, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
