The board owed the Chargers one, and it paid up: Cornelius Johnson, the No. 186 name on the board, sitting there at slot 237 like a gift left on the doorstep.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They were the ones paying the moving tax this weekend.
The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September. The roster is better shaped than it was, with interior defensive lineman chief among the fixes.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 28 they get a home-run threat at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
By-the-book stuff, Ennis Rakestraw Jr. at the 37th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the Round 2 slot is the definition of value, full stop. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A straight-up fair deal on Edgerrin Cooper at the 51st pick, value and slot in agreement. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Cade Stover in No. 69 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Brenden Rice slid further than he should have, and pick 105 is lovely value for the wide receiver. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Leonard Taylor III. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Caelen Carson in pick No. 119 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Trevor Keegan in pick No. 140 is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They read the board right and Dillon Johnson was the payoff at Round 6, Pick 3. It fills a real need, too.
Tanor Bortolini at slot 189 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Steele Chambers at the 205th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Caedan Wallace at the Round 7 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A need, and now a little less of one.
Cornelius Johnson at No. 237 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A quiet steal in pick 253: Josh Proctor for less than the market said. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
