Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Kevin Winston Jr. got past him. The Texans do not have to explain a thing at the 164th pick.
The Capehart pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered. The skill positions did well by the weekend.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 19 they get a true top target at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Tyler Warren at pick No. 53 is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Luke Kandra. A need, and now a little less of one.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, DeMonte Capehart well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Somehow Kevin Winston Jr. was still sitting there in pick 164, and they pounced on premier safety value. A minor need, but a need all the same.
The board fumbled Xavier Nwankpa all the way to the 235th overall pick, and they scooped it up. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
