The tape said wait; the Texans did not. Thor Griffith went at pick No. 165, a good 112 picks before the board was ready. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
However the rest shakes out, Mukuba at that price is a win they earned. They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The skill positions did well by the weekend.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Tyler Warren at pick 58 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They will replay Tate Ratledge at pick No. 89 for years; that is how good the value is. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Somehow Andrew Mukuba was still sitting there in Round 4, Pick 25, and they pounced on premier safety value. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Thor Griffith this early at the 165th pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
You do not let a linebacker like Jack Kiser reach the 241st overall pick and blink. They did not. A need, and now a little less of one.
