Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Texans were there to profit. Kevin Winston Jr., the No. 103 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 167th pick.
They will need Griffith to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but running back.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get a matchup weapon at tight end at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Isaiah Bond in the Round 2 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Donovan Jackson in slot 89 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Denzel Burke at Round 4, Pick 26 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Kevin Winston Jr. in pick 167 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Thor Griffith at pick No. 243 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
