The weekend has a hole in the middle of it named edge rusher, a need the Texans walked right past. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
If McLachlan pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Watson.
They left with running back solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 23 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. More want than need.
By-the-book stuff, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at No. 59 squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Good price on Malachi Corley in the Round 3 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reach on Malik Mustapha in the 123rd overall pick; the board had better options right there. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A conviction pick on Jaheim Bell at pick 127 that the board grades a round light. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They let Braelon Allen come to them and pounced at Round 5, Pick 28. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Blake Watson slid further than he should have, and pick No. 239 is lovely value for the running back. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Tanner McLachlan in the 248th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
