The board owed the Texans one, and it paid up: Billy Bowman Jr., the No. 111 name on the board, sitting there at Round 5, Pick 28 like a gift left on the doorstep. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
The Griffith reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a No. 1 receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Tyler Booker in pick 58, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Colston Loveland at Round 3, Pick 25 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A need, and now a little less of one.
Vernon Broughton at slot 126 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Taking Billy Bowman Jr. in the Round 5 slot is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Thor Griffith in the 241st overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
