The Texans treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending pick No. 164 on De'Corian Clark a full 36 spots early. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
They will regret leaving offensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. Running back was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 23 they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
They paid sticker price for Edgerrin Cooper in pick No. 59, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Leonard Taylor III in Round 3, Pick 22 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Malik Mustapha in the Round 4 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A minor itch, scratched.
A conviction pick on Jaheim Bell at No. 127 that the board grades a round light. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A wild overpay on De'Corian Clark in the 164th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Xavier Thomas at Round 7, Pick 19 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A reach on Carson Steele in No. 248; the board had better options right there. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
