You can hear the double-takes from here. The Texans took Julius Welschof at pick No. 245, roughly 155 spots before his name belonged. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
The Vaki pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with wide receiver, offensive lineman and other spots still on the board. They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
A tidy little value on Jared Verse in Round 1, Pick 23, a step better than break-even. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Nothing to complain about; Ja'Tavion Sanders went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Value said wait; Leonard Taylor III in the 86th overall pick says they were not listening. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Renardo Green in the Round 4 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They bypassed pressing needs at wide receiver, offensive lineman and other spots to take Sione Vaki, a safety that was not the priority.
Blake Watson in pick 236 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Julius Welschof well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Tanner McLachlan at the 250th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
