The board owed the Texans one, and it paid up: Braelon Allen, the No. 157 name on the board, sitting there at Round 7, Pick 16 like a gift left on the doorstep.
McLachlan has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Spending an early pick on cornerback with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Cooper DeJean in pick No. 23. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Edgerrin Cooper in pick 59 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Ennis Rakestraw Jr. while clear needs at edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots sat open.
Malachi Corley in slot 124 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A conviction pick on Sione Vaki at the Round 4 slot that the board grades a round light. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They did well to land Ty'Ron Hopper in the 161st pick, just ahead of his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Braelon Allen at No. 236 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Tanner McLachlan well ahead of where he belonged. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
