Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Texans spent pick 243 on Thor Griffith, a name most had 67 spots down the list.
Getting Winston Jr. where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
Nice patience on Tyler Warren, who had no business lasting to Round 1, Pick 25. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They let Matthew Golden come to them and pounced at the 58th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Donovan Jackson in slot 89. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Steal is underselling it; Savion Williams at No. 127 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They barely believed it either: Kevin Winston Jr. still on the board at pick No. 167. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They reached into another round for Thor Griffith, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
