There is reaching, and then there is Micah Morris at Round 7, Pick 27. The Texans jumped the board by 80 and dared it to prove them wrong.
The Slaughter pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 28th overall pick they get a green-dot type in the middle at fair value. A real need, handled.
By-the-book stuff, Emmanuel Pregnon at slot 38 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, Caleb Banks in the Round 2 slot, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They took Jadarian Price at par in the 69th pick, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Taking Jake Slaughter in pick 106 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
Nadame Tucker at No. 141 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A clean, defensible pick in the 167th pick with a little surplus value in Nate Boerkircher. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Value said wait; Micah Morris in No. 243 says they were not listening. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
