Somebody in the 167th overall pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Texans sat still while Lathan Ransom, the No. 107 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
They will need Griffith to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 25 they get a seam-stretching tight end at a price that makes it sweeter.
They went early on Tate Ratledge in Round 2, Pick 26, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Donovan Jackson in the 89th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They barely believed it either: Isaiah Bond still on the board at No. 127. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A safety of that caliber at the Round 5 slot is the definition of value, full stop. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They talked themselves into Thor Griffith at the 243rd overall pick, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
