Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Texans spent pick No. 243 on Thor Griffith, a name most had 50 spots down the list.
Bowman Jr. falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get a red-zone target to build around at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Value with a capital V on T.J. Sanders in the Round 2 slot, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Donovan Jackson at No. 89 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Tez Johnson at the 127th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
You do not let a safety like Billy Bowman Jr. reach pick 167 and blink. They did not. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A wild overpay on Thor Griffith in Round 7, Pick 25, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
