You can hear the double-takes from here. The Texans took VJ Payne at pick 167, roughly 24 spots before his name belonged.
They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. However the rest shakes out, Hecht at that price is a win they earned.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 28 they get a mismatch in the passing game at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
They took Caleb Banks at par in pick No. 38, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Value with a capital V on Lee Hunter in the Round 2 slot, a genuine coup. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
By-the-book stuff, Jacob Rodriguez at slot 69 squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
They will replay Sam Hecht at the 106th pick for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
Kaytron Allen at Round 5, Pick 1 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
VJ Payne at No. 167 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A straight-up fair deal on Trey Zuhn III at the 243rd pick, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
