New England Patriots

The Patriots cashed the board's mistake on Singleton: A-.

The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Nicholas Singleton, the No. 102 name on the board, in the 219th overall pick. Very little went wrong, and the A- is earned.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Every board in the league had Fleming lower, and that gap is the story.

The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.3 · Pick 3 · Kelvin Banks Jr. · OT · rank 4
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Kenneth Grant · DT · rank 26
Kenneth Grant at pick No. 34 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Tyler Booker · OG · rank 37
Tyler Booker at slot 36 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Tyler Warren · TE · rank 44
You do not let a tight end like Tyler Warren reach pick 67 and blink. They did not. The roster fit checks out.
R3.15 · Pick 79 · Jalen Royals · WR · rank 66
Jalen Royals at No. 79 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.2 · Pick 103 · TreVeyon Henderson · RB · rank 61
TreVeyon Henderson in the 103rd overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.1 · Pick 138 · Barrett Carter · LB · rank 83
The board fumbled Barrett Carter all the way to the 138th pick, and they scooped it up. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R7.3 · Pick 219 · Nicholas Singleton · RB · rank 102
They robbed the room for Nicholas Singleton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Seth McLaughlin · C · rank 202
Taking Seth McLaughlin in pick No. 220 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.22 · Pick 238 · Julian Fleming · WR · rank 268
They talked themselves into Julian Fleming at pick 238, and the board did not agree. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
