Nobody had Carson Steele this high, and it is not close. The Packers reached 94 spots to get him at pick No. 160.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. Spending an early pick on safety with quarterback and interior defensive lineman open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not. Getting Kinchens where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 27th pick they get a cornerstone up front. A real need, handled.
A tidy bit of business in pick 41, where Kamren Kinchens graded well above the range. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Johnny Wilson in the 66th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zach Frazier. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Cooper Beebe at pick No. 85 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board had cheaper options than Will Shipley at slot 88, and it noticed. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Kris Abrams-Draine in Round 3, Pick 29, miles early. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Cam Hart at slot 119 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Cole Bishop in pick 121 leaves quarterback and interior defensive lineman for later.
Javon Foster in No. 127 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Darius Robinson well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A straight-up fair deal on Ben Sinnott at the 159th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Carson Steele at the Round 5 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
