You can draft well and still miss the point. The Dolphins did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to edge rusher, which was the need that mattered most. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
The James pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. Every board in the league had Jones lower, and that gap is the story. The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.
The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
Edgerrin Cooper in pick No. 53 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They paid sticker price for Zak Zinter in No. 92, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, DJ James at slot 129. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
By-the-book stuff, Joe Milton III at the 158th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Christian Jones in the Round 6 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No edge and no loss on De'Corian Clark in the 199th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Aaron Frost at Round 7, Pick 22 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
