There is conviction, and then there is this. The Dolphins took Grant Gunnell a full 150 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. The Flax pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 21 they get a long-term starter on the line, though the board says they badly overpaid.
They jumped the gun on Cooper Beebe, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They took Justin Rogers at par in No. 158, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A straight-up fair deal on Ethan Driskell at the 183rd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Michael Barrett in the 186th pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
By-the-book stuff, De'Corian Clark at the Round 6 slot squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Sheridan Jones in Round 6, Pick 45 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Grant Gunnell at the 242nd pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They let Jeremy Flax come to them and pounced at No. 247. It fills a real need, too.
