Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Dolphins were there to profit. Karene Reid, the No. 191 name on the board, should have been long gone before the Round 7 slot. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
They will need Caldwell to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.
The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 22nd overall pick they get a two-high chess piece at a price that makes it sweeter.
They robbed the room for Tyler Warren here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Tate Ratledge at Round 3, Pick 22 is the proof. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A slide stopped in the 98th pick, with Dylan Fairchild worth more than the price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.

Circle this one: Jack Bech at slot 123 is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Taking Jake Majors in No. 133 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They will replay Lathan Ransom at the Round 5 slot for years; that is how good the value is. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They talked themselves into Cobee Bryant at slot 154, and the board did not agree. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A big swing on Thor Griffith at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A real head-scratcher, Jamaree Caldwell in Round 7, Pick 15 is miles ahead of his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They barely believed it either: Karene Reid still on the board at pick 252. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
