Somebody in the 133rd overall pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Chiefs sat still while Josh Newton, the No. 82 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
The Newton pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback, running back and other spots still on the board. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. They went 3 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
A quiet steal in Round 1, Pick 32: JC Latham for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Kool-Aid McKinstry in pick 64 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A minor itch, scratched.
Value with a capital V on Roman Wilson in slot 95, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 133 on Josh Newton with quarterback, running back and other spots unsolved.
Malik Washington at pick No. 158 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Somehow Ben Sinnott was still sitting there in the 172nd overall pick, and they pounced on premier tight end value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No edge and no loss on Christian Jones in the Round 6 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
