Somebody in slot 210 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Chiefs sat still while Andru Phillips, the No. 176 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. Every board in the league had Cephus lower, and that gap is the story. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 32 they get a weapon on the perimeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
No edge and no loss on Mekhi Wingo in No. 64; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Johnny Wilson in the 95th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A cornerback of that caliber at slot 133 is the definition of value, full stop. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
By-the-book stuff, Braelon Allen at pick 158 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
They let Ty'Ron Hopper come to them and pounced at Round 5, Pick 36. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They barely believed it either: Andru Phillips still on the board at the Round 6 slot. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They liked Joshua Cephus enough to skip the value, taking him in the 250th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
