The phones were a trap the Chargers kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. The final tally is a middling C+.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They will need Benson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
It nets out as a middle-of-the-pack haul that neither helps nor hurts much.
Pick-by-Pick
No drama and no debate, Xavier Legette went about where he belonged in pick 37. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
T.J. Tampa at the 47th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the 69th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Trey Benson in pick No. 70 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A straight-up fair deal on Maason Smith at No. 105, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Matt Goncalves. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A conviction pick on Theo Johnson at slot 111 that the board grades a round light. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Nice patience on Chau Smith-Wade, who had no business lasting to the Round 5 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid a round early for Luke McCaffrey in pick No. 141, more than the board wanted. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Tanor Bortolini at the 181st pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A reach on Justin Rogers in slot 185; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jordan Magee at the Round 7 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Josh Proctor in Round 7, Pick 33 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It adds depth where they could use a little.
