There is conviction, and then there is this. The Packers took Braiden McGregor a full 63 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. About as rough as the board gets, and a F to prove it.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
The Packers indulged a want in Bishop while a need in quarterback stayed open.
In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get an anchor for the offensive line. A real need, handled.
Kamren Kinchens in No. 41 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Cooper Beebe at the Round 2 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A premium they did not need to pay, Johnny Wilson a notch or two before his time. A need, and now a little less of one.
Khyree Jackson at slot 88 is a conviction pick that outran the value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Tyler Davis in Round 3, Pick 31 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They reached into another round for Kris Abrams-Draine, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Javon Foster. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A straight-up fair deal on Will Shipley at the 125th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback to take Cole Bishop, a safety that was not the priority.
A big swing on Braelon Allen at No. 132, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ben Sinnott. The roster fit checks out.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Braiden McGregor this early at pick No. 135. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
