The Dolphins did not so much draft Nathan Thomas as overpay for him, 27 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. The Bertrand pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The trade work was a quiet net positive.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 21 they get a premier pass rusher, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Christian Haynes in Round 2, Pick 27 is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
They paid sticker price for Johnny Wilson in the Round 4 slot, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Nehemiah Pritchett at pick No. 158 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A premium they did not need to pay, Justin Rogers a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A real head-scratcher, Nathan Thomas in No. 201 is miles ahead of his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, JD Bertrand in Round 7, Pick 21, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Kalen DeLoach in pick No. 249 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
