When a board-topper like Johnny Dixon slides to pick No. 241, you do not overthink it, and the Dolphins did not. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
The cost of the Jefferson reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
Brian Thomas Jr. in the 25th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Cooper Beebe is a better player than the 55th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A straight-up fair deal on Braelon Allen at No. 100, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Trevor Keegan in the Round 5 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They reached into another round for Jordan Jefferson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Joe Milton III at pick No. 184 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Malik Mustapha in pick 198 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They will replay Johnny Dixon at slot 241 for years; that is how good the value is. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
