Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Chargers were there to profit. Ty'Ron Hopper, the No. 181 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 7, Pick 5. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
The cost of the Gargiulo reach is exactly the players who went right after him. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Interior defensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 5 they get a No. 1 receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at slot 37 is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Somehow Cooper DeJean was still sitting there in pick 69, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Audric Estime. The roster fit checks out.
Malik Washington in pick No. 110 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Cam Hart at the 140th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid sticker price for Fabien Lovett in the 181st overall pick, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board fumbled Ty'Ron Hopper all the way to the Round 7 slot, and they scooped it up. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Nick Gargiulo in slot 253 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
