When a board-topper like Anthony Gould slides to the 225th overall pick, you do not overthink it, and the Chargers did not.
Reaching for Nugent left real value on the table behind him. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a go-to option on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Jordan Morgan in the 37th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
DJ James in slot 69 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing MarShawn Lloyd in Round 4, Pick 5. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Value with a capital V on Cam Hart in pick No. 110, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
James Williams at pick 140 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Drake Nugent at No. 181 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Anthony Gould at the 225th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Fabien Lovett reach Round 7, Pick 33 and blink. They did not. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
