The board owed the Chiefs one, and it paid up: Julian Pearl, the No. 204 name on the board, sitting there at pick 252 like a gift left on the doorstep. The bottom line is a respectable B.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
They will need Milton III to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 29 they get a building block for the line, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Ladd McConkey at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
T.J. Tampa at No. 64 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Brenden Rice in Round 3, Pick 32 is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They jumped the gun on Justin Eboigbe, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The roster fit checks out.
Nehemiah Pritchett at the 173rd pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They talked themselves into Joe Milton III at the 183rd overall pick, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
Julian Pearl at pick No. 252 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
