Somebody in the 252nd overall pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Chiefs sat still while Fabien Lovett, the No. 183 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
A top-tier edge rusher at a bargain, Laiatu Latu in Round 1, Pick 32, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Ja'Tavion Sanders in the 64th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Javon Baker at slot 95 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Javon Foster is a better player than the 132nd pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They will replay Ainias Smith at pick No. 159 for years; that is how good the value is. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Josh Newton at pick 173 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They barely believed it either: Fabien Lovett still on the board at the Round 7 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
