Call it larceny. Trente Jones sat on the board until pick No. 252, and the Chiefs did not need to be asked twice. They executed a plan and it shows in the A.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. The Chiefs paired the rookies with proven help, Cordell Volson leading the way.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
It is a haul that will look even better come September.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Xavier Legette in No. 33; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A tight end of that caliber at Round 3, Pick 4 is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They will replay Kiran Amegadjie at the Round 3 slot for years; that is how good the value is. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Dallin Holker at pick 173 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Somehow Tahj Washington was still sitting there in slot 231, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Trente Jones reach the 252nd pick and blink. They did not. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
