Somebody in Round 7, Pick 24 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Chiefs sat still while Ryan Flournoy, the No. 203 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
They will need Shirden to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 32 they get a building block for the line at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
A clean, defensible pick in the 64th overall pick with a little surplus value in Ricky Pearsall. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They did well to land Javon Baker in the Round 3 slot, just ahead of his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Johnny Wilson at pick 132 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board had Dallin Holker higher than Round 5, Pick 23, and the tight end fell to them anyway. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Tommy Eichenberg at the 174th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A need, and now a little less of one.
They will replay Ryan Flournoy at slot 244 for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jaden Shirden at pick No. 252 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
