The Dolphins clearly saw something nobody else did in Solomon Byrd, taking him 35 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. It grades a D-, and the process earned it.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. They chose more darts over a bigger single swing.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 21 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value.
They paid sticker price for Adisa Isaac in pick No. 55, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
DeWayne Carter at No. 104 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A real head-scratcher, Chau Smith-Wade in the Round 4 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
Nothing to complain about; Kitan Oladapo went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They did well to land Ty'Ron Hopper in pick 184, just ahead of his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kendall Milton. The roster fit checks out.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Solomon Byrd in slot 226, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
