The Cowboys spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Josaiah Stewart, the No. 42 name on the board, in the 248th pick.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse.
If Travis Hunter and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 19th overall pick they get a lockdown presence outside, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They barely believed it either: Ashton Jeanty still on the board at pick No. 45. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Cam Ward at the Round 3 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A need, and now a little less of one.
Taking Walter Nolen in slot 120 is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A running back of that caliber at No. 151 is the definition of value, full stop. The roster fit checks out.
Wyatt Milum in Round 5, Pick 30 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Dylan Fairchild in pick 170 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
You do not let a linebacker like Jihaad Campbell reach the 171st pick and blink. They did not. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jahdae Barron in the 189th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They robbed the room for Xavier Restrepo here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Steal is underselling it; Josaiah Stewart at pick No. 248 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
