Somebody took the Dolphins to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it. A D that will need time and luck to look better.
The Ugwu reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Carson value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 28th overall pick they get a cornerstone up front, a steep price for the projection.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Kris Jenkins at No. 53. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Roman Wilson in the Round 3 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Caelen Carson at pick 104 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Cedric Gray at slot 127 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The roster fit checks out.
A premium they did not need to pay, Theo Johnson a notch or two before his time. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Kitan Oladapo at pick No. 161 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They went early on Eric Watts in the 186th pick, and the value did not follow. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on JD Bertrand at No. 199, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They talked themselves into Brian Ugwu at the Round 6 slot, and the board did not agree. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
