The Packers did not so much draft Austin Reed as overpay for him, 119 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.

Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Gore Jr.. It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first.

The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.25 · Pick 25 · Kool-Aid McKinstry · CB · rank 19
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a sticky cover corner. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Kamren Kinchens · S · rank 34
Kamren Kinchens in pick No. 41 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A minor itch, scratched.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Chop Robinson · DE-EDGE · rank 35
Chop Robinson in No. 57 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 82
A reasonable price with a little left over, Mike Sainristil in pick 88. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Tykee Smith · S · rank 97
A surprising call. With tight end and interior defensive lineman still to address, they spent the Round 3 slot on Tykee Smith, a safety they were not short of.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · MarShawn Lloyd · RB · rank 130
MarShawn Lloyd at the 125th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.35 · Pick 135 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 127
Tommy Eichenberg at pick No. 135 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R6.28 · Pick 203 · Frank Gore Jr. · RB · rank 171
Frank Gore Jr. in Round 6, Pick 28 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.42 · Pick 217 · De'Corian Clark · WR · rank 200
They read the board right and De'Corian Clark was the payoff at pick 217. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R6.44 · Pick 219 · Austin Reed · QB · rank 338
They reached a country mile for Austin Reed at the Round 6 slot, and the board is aghast. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.26 · Pick 246 · Trevor Keegan · OG · rank 234
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Trevor Keegan in slot 246. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
