Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Commanders came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close. Just about everything broke right, and the A- follows.
Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The cost of the Johnson reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Amarius Mims and all.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 22 they get a long-term starter on the line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, J.J. McCarthy at slot 36 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Chop Robinson at Round 2, Pick 8 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
No drama and no debate, Jackson Powers-Johnson went about where he belonged in the 50th pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They did well to land Graham Barton in pick No. 54, just ahead of his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Payton Wilson at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 101 with a little surplus value in Audric Estime. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A premium they did not need to pay, Theo Johnson a notch or two before his time. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They took Jaylan Ford at par in pick 181, which is nothing to complain about. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Ryan Watts in the 220th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
