The board owed the Cowboys one, and it paid up: Tommi Hill, the No. 123 name on the board, sitting there at pick 209 like a gift left on the doorstep.
If Jefferson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.
They reloaded the coverage unit in bulk.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a press-man option on the boundary, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A quiet steal in No. 44: Emeka Egbuka for less than the market said. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Alfred Collins at pick 76 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A need, and now a little less of one.
Circle this one: Cam Skattebo at Round 5, Pick 11 is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Somehow Sebastian Castro was still sitting there in the 168th pick, and they pounced on premier safety value. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Jeffrey Bassa at pick No. 170 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Earnest Greene III in slot 171 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They barely believed it either: Jaeden Roberts still on the board at the 187th overall pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Steal is underselling it; Tommi Hill at pick No. 209 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Value said wait; KJ Jefferson in slot 247 says they were not listening. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
