You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Clayton Smith in the 247th overall pick. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Majors. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 12 they get a bell-cow for the offense, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
Quinn Ewers in slot 44 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They reached a country mile for Tez Johnson at No. 76, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Barryn Sorrell at the 148th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Jeffrey Bassa in the Round 5 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Somehow Jake Majors was still sitting there in Round 5, Pick 33, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, DJ Campbell well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
You do not let a running back like Cam Skattebo reach Round 6, Pick 12 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Value said wait; Jamaree Caldwell in pick No. 209 says they were not listening. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They reached into another round for Clayton Smith, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
