The Chargers did not so much draft DeMonte Capehart as overpay for him, 41 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. That Wease Jr. pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
The skill positions did well by the weekend.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 5 they get a matchup weapon at tight end. A clean fit for the roster.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Chop Robinson. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
D.J. James in No. 69 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Blake Fisher in the Round 4 slot, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
By-the-book stuff, Dylan Laube at pick No. 142 squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A tidy bit of business in the 183rd overall pick, where Theo Wease Jr. graded well above the range. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
DeMonte Capehart at Round 7, Pick 6 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
