Washington Commanders

The Commanders fleeced the room on the phones and earned a A-.

The trade table was a mismatch, and the Commanders were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. Little to argue with here, and the A- says so.

All has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Spending an early pick on linebacker with running back open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up.

The King value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.

Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Jordan Morgan and all.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.17 · Pick 17 · Jordan Morgan · OT · rank 26
In Round 1, Pick 17 they get protection for the quarterback, though they paid up to get him. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · T.J. Tampa · CB · rank 46
A reach for T.J. Tampa in No. 36; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 43
J.J. McCarthy at pick 40 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · Ja'Tavion Sanders · TE · rank 47
Ja'Tavion Sanders in pick No. 42 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R2.16 · Pick 48 · Jonah Elliss · DE-EDGE · rank 54
Jonah Elliss at the 48th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Kalen King · CB · rank 49
They barely believed it either: Kalen King still on the board at the 67th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.33 · Pick 96 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 111
They liked Cooper Beebe enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 96. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 114
They paid a round early for Junior Colson in the Round 3 slot, more than the board wanted. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 109
They bypassed pressing needs at running back to take Tommy Eichenberg, a linebacker that was not the priority.
R5.5 · Pick 141 · Moose Muhammad III · WR · rank 153
Moose Muhammad III at No. 141 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · T.J. Sanders · DT · rank 203
T.J. Sanders at the Round 6 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Erick All · TE · rank 249
This one needs a full-page explanation: Erick All in slot 223, miles early. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
