This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Cam Skattebo, the No. 105 name on the board, stolen at the 240th overall pick. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
They are betting Caldwell proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
The Knight Jr. pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback still on the board. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
A wild overpay on Grey Zabel in slot 17, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Donovan Ezeiruaku at Round 2, Pick 6 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jalon Walker at the Round 2 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It adds depth where they could use a little.
You do not let a tight end like Colston Loveland reach the 50th pick and blink. They did not. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A reach on Darien Porter in No. 69; the board had better options right there. A minor itch, scratched.
Ozzy Trapilo in the 77th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A surprising call. With quarterback still to address, they spent pick 105 on Demetrius Knight Jr., a linebacker they were not short of.
Darius Alexander at pick No. 118 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Emery Jones Jr. in the 128th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Andrew Mukuba at No. 136 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at slot 137 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They robbed the room for Carson Schwesinger here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Luke Lachey at pick No. 212 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A need, and now a little less of one.
They reached into another round for Jamaree Caldwell, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Miles Frazier at Round 7, Pick 4 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A running back of that caliber at the Round 7 slot is the definition of value, full stop. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
