The value of the weekend has a name and a slot: Malaki Starks, the Round 2 slot, roughly 47 picks past where he belonged. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
The cost of the Broughton reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
Tyler Booker at pick 34 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They barely believed it either: Malaki Starks still on the board at the 64th overall pick. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A linebacker of that caliber at slot 66 is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They robbed the room for Gunnar Helm here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jack Nelson at No. 96 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Value said wait; Vernon Broughton in the Round 4 slot says they were not listening. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
You do not let a wide receiver like Savion Williams reach pick No. 132 and blink. They did not. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Cam Skattebo at the 153rd pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The roster fit checks out.
