The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Michael Penix Jr., and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The cost of the Eichenberg reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Milton at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 22 they get the arm they will build around, outstanding value to boot.
Troy Franklin in pick 34 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jordan Morgan slipping to Round 2, Pick 18 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Ja'Tavion Sanders in the 53rd pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The roster fit checks out.
DJ James at No. 68 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Tommy Eichenberg this early at slot 103. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They barely believed it either: Javon Solomon still on the board at the 137th overall pick. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
A straight-up fair deal on Steele Chambers at the Round 6 slot, value and slot in agreement. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Circle this one: Jha'Quan Jackson at the Round 6 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Steal is underselling it; Kendall Milton at the 231st pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A need, and now a little less of one.
